2013 AMD World Championship Cafe Racers

The annual custom motorcycle craziness that is the AMD World Championship of bike building has been and gone again. This year along with the plethora of out of this world choppers we also saw a huge jump in Cafe Racer styled bikes competing for the crown. First, second and third places in the street performance category were taken out by Cafe Racers and several others held top ten positions in the freestyle class. Here’s a few of winners and runner ups…

First place winner of the Street Performance class was Laurent Dutruel & Stephanie Bonhomme of Zen Motorcycles with their turbo charged Harley-Davidson XR 1200. The bike has around 650 hours of work in it (and it’s not finished!) and will be heading to Bonneville Salt Flats soon with an aim to set some new high speed records.

Second place in the Street Performance Class went to Yuri Shif and his Ducati 992cc ‘Shifter’ Cafe Racer. This isn’t Yuri’s first award at the show or on this site. His twin engined “Machine” took out 3rd place in the 2010 freestyle class and I featured his lovely green Triumph Cafe Racer back in 2012. The Shifter features a girder style front end, Brembo discs front and rear and custom bodywork and exhaust by Yuri.

My personal favourite and 3rd place winner in the Street Performance Class was this beauty from Krazy Horse in the United Kingdom. The “Ace Cafe Racer CR1200” is powered by a Harley Davidson CR1200 bolted into a ‘Norley’ nickel plated featherbed frame. The bike is part of a limited run by Krazy Horse that a;so features an uprated engine, alloy short circuit tank, two into one into two stainless pipes and Ohlins rear shocks.

Fred Krugger was there again this year and placed 4th in the freestyle class with his Honda CB450 ‘Link’. The reversed head on this bike is sure to raise an eyebrow or two but Krugger assured me, when I featured this bike a few months ago, that it’s not just about looks. This bike will also be making it’s way to the slat flat speed trails soon for some open throttle record attempts!

Oil in the Blood – Interview with the Director

Placing 6th in the freestyle class is this awesome ride from Czech workshop Wildstyle. Named simply Zt the bike is powered by a 126 cubic inch Ultima engine in a heavily modified frame. Both the colour and the rear suspension set up make this bike pretty special.

Last but not least I had to add in bike you see below. Sidecar entries are rare at the AMD but they are almost always jaw droppingly cool. This beauty took out 5th place in the Freestyle Class and it’s also from the Czech workshop Wildstyle. It’s a ’42 Harley Flathead with custom pipes, Dell’Orto carbs, a Wildstyle gas tank, frame and sidecar with “air levelling”.
